July 6, 2010: The Montreal International Reggae Festival (MIRF)
returns to the Quays of The Old Port with a slate of renowned artists
who carry on the legacy of Caribbean music. Original Wailers member,
Bunny Wailer, makes his long awaited Montreal appearance at this
seventh staging of what has become a tradition for Reggae music
supporters from around the world. Having harnessed the usual best in
the business of Reggae, the festival rolls out at a new time frame:
August 6, 7 and 8, 2010.
“This year we have created a sense of lasting legacy by showcasing
internationally respected Caribbean musicians, whose music continues
to bring people from all walks of life together,” says MIRF President,
Eric Blagrove. By ushering festival goers into the realm of a
‘Caribbean Coalition’ of top instrumentalists and stellar vocalists,
Blagrove and the MIRF team will uphold their commitment to presenting
an artistic platform of excellence.
Fusing Reggae with Calypso and Soca rhythms, MIRF’s opening night will
be a celebration of Caribbean music. Confirmed artists for “Caribbean
Night” include: Jamaica’s Byron Lee’s Dragonnaires, whose recent
golden anniversary brought light to a custom of them literallybringing
Caribbean music around the world; including annual stints at
Montreal’s former Edgewater Hotel. Becket, also referred to as the
‘ABC’ of Calypso/Soca, will share the opening night stage. He boasts
an illustrious career, spanning some 30 years, with 21 albums and
numerous award winning singles – including the popular hit, “Teaser”.
The legacy will be further highlighted with performances fromPluto – a
former original Dragonnaires who branched off to pursue a successful
solo career.
Dubbed “Dancehall Night”, the festival’s Saturday night will see an
eclectic gathering of all time favorites. Reggae rappers bringing this
innovative art-form to the MIRF this year include Lady Saw, the first
female dancehall deejay to win a Grammy, which she did with No Doubt
for “Underneath it All” –Best Performance by a Duo or Group. Her
unique blends of advocatory and raunchy lyrics have over the years
earned her the coveted title of Dancehall Matriarch.
Lyrically adept, Baby Cham, whose internationally acclaimed
collaborations with Rihanna and Alicia Keys have included the hits,
“Boom Boom” and “Ghetto Story” will join other first rate deejays
like, Mr. Vegas, Sustain and Little John.
Bunny Wailer who, along with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, was a major
player in initiating what is now a global fascination for the “up beat
one drop” sound of Reggae music, will bring his wise words and
astounding rhythms to the final night of MIRF. This “Vintage Night”
will also feature Reggae music heavyweights, Leroy Gibbons, Frankie
Paul, Peter Tosh’s son Tosh 1 and ‘Tony Gits.
