Louisa Mark Reggae Singer, picture in her youth, black and white
Pioneering Lovers Rock singer, Louisa Mark passed away in Gambia on Saturday 17th October, with initial reports suggesting there had been complications with a stomach ulcer, the result of food poisoning.

An admirer of American R&B, she was one of the most influential British-based reggae singers of her generation, blending contemporary soul music with Jamaican rhythms and in so doing, becoming a major player in the creation of a whole new style of music: Lovers Rock.

The appeal of reggae, like soul music, is universal. Both genres have been embraced over the years by music lovers worldwide, especially Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora. New York-based Jammins Entertainment will present the Reggae Legends and Soul Legends Concert Series - billed as a celebration of nostalgia and enduring talent.
The concert series will be held on Thanksgiving weekend at the prestigious, landmark venue, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), located at 30 Lafayette Ave in Brooklyn, New York.
The highly anticipated concert series will feature some of the most distinctive, standard-setting artistes who will showcase their musical repertoire and style.
The first show is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2009 at 7 pm and will spotlight the reggae ambassadors, Third World. Celebrating 36 years in the business, this talented and entertaining musical aggregation are known for hit songs like Forbidden Love, Try Jah Love, Sense Of Purpose, Hold On to Love, Reggae Party and Reggae Ambassador. Also billed to perform are reggae lover's rock king Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle, and the royal empress of reggae - Marcia Griffiths.
"Truly, there are probably only a very few professional disc jockeys who would claim to not own an album from these artistes; and likewise it would be difficult to find any bona fide lover of reggae who can say that he/she has never heard Gregory Isaacs' Night Nurse and Cool Ruler; or Inner Circle's Bad Boys and Sweat (A La La La La Long); Third World's Try Jah Love and 96 Degrees; or Marcia Griffiths' Electric Slide and I Shall Sing" event promoter George Crooks said.
The second show is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 7:30 pm, featuring three R&B all-time, standard-setting groups - The Temptation Review, The Manhattans and Rose Royce. Anchored by Dennis Edwards' raw, fervent vocals, the Temptations have kept folks sweating on the dance floor and in the bedroom with their special brand of soul music.
Other crowd favourites slated to perform are the original Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston along with Blue Lovett, and '70s super group Rose Royce. These enduring groups hardly need any introduction, given their role in defining, advancing and influencing R&B music over the last 40-plus years.
